About the ParaPathways exam
Is ParaPathways the same as the ParaPro test?
ParaPathways is the test that replaced it. ETS launched ParaPathways on September 1, 2025 and ended the ParaPro Assessment on September 1, 2026, so most states now use ParaPathways for paraprofessionals. It covers the same three subjects, reading, writing and math, but the outline was updated: more on reading fluency, phonics, textual evidence, citing sources and data, and an on-screen calculator for math. Many people still call it the ParaPro.
How many questions are on the test?
ParaPathways has two subtests. Reading and Writing has 51 questions in 85 minutes, and Mathematics has 36 questions in 60 minutes. Six questions in each subtest are trial questions that don't count, so 45 Reading and Writing questions and 30 math questions are scored. You can take both subtests together or on different days.
What score do I need to pass?
Scores run from 310 to 350 for each subtest, and you need to pass both. ETS recommends 332 for Reading and Writing (about 28 of the 45 scored questions) and 334 for Math (about 20 of the 30), and most states use those scores. Some set their own, for example Washington uses 324 and 325. Check your state or school district for the score you need.
Can I use a calculator?
Yes, on the math subtest. ParaPathways gives you an on-screen four-function calculator for the Mathematics subtest. You can't bring your own, and there is no calculator on the Reading and Writing subtest. The old ParaPro allowed no calculator at all.
Who needs to take it?
Under federal Title I rules, a teacher's aide (paraprofessional) who helps with instruction in a Title I school needs a high school diploma or equivalent plus one of three things: two years of college, an associate's degree or higher, or a passing score on a formal assessment such as ParaPathways. Many districts ask aides without a college degree to pass it before they are hired.
Is this the official test?
No. This is practice material to help you prepare. ParaPathways is given by ETS at test centers and online at home. This site is not affiliated with ETS, and our questions are written for practice and are not taken from the real test.
